Rattan is a solid, bendable tropical rain forest climbing palm, featuring a sheath with spines that needs trees to wrap on to and soak in sunlight, and could reach 100 meters in length. It’s solid all through the length of the tendrils and flexible enough that it makes a perfect vine tree to use for basket weaving and furniture making. It also has a long standing reputation of durability, being lightweight and sturdy, rattan stands out as one of the strongest non-wood materials in the world.
